SYA: Summer Youth Academy

Each summer the MLK Center hosts a Summer Youth Academy for children 3 years – grade 6. The curriculum is partially academic, promoting reading through a literacy program to minimize the gap of many students already starting the summer behind academically…

But we don’t stay cooped up indoors reading all day, it’s SUMMER! In addition to weekly trips to the pool, intense games of basketball on our blacktop and hosting our own picnics, we love it when community members come share their talents and host a workshop.

Do you act? sing? dance? climb ice cliffs (isn’t the proper name for that summit?) thumb wrestle like a champ? do special effects makeup? weave baskets? juggle? mastered the slam dunk?

Whatever your talent, if you’re interested in sharing a mini workshop with our students please let us know and we’ll put you on the calendar for the summer!
